Dawn found them near the Des Moines International Airport, smack in the middle of Iowa, on a stretch of road full of industrial buildings and long-term parking lots. They’d found a place to rent a van, but it wasn’t open yet, which put them both on the sidewalk in the humid morning, with the sound of jet engines rumbling in the background.

Ben handed the key fob to Cormac. “Just go, I’ll be fine. You need to keep moving.”

“You sure?”

“I’ve got a phone and a credit card. It’s all good. If we can confuse them a few more hours, well—you’re halfway there already.”

Splitting up felt wrong. They were both tired and buzzed on coffee. Cormac had managed a couple of hours of sleep. They’d switched drivers when they’d stopped for gas, and then Ben had gotten a couple of hours. They were both okay, but definitely weren’t at their sharpest. He just had to be satisfied that Ben could take care of himself. He’d use the credit card to rent the van. That would ping his location to anyone who was tracking transactions and draw their attention. Or so they hoped.

Ben looked in to the back of the van one more time. “Nia. It’s been good meeting you. Safe travels.”

“I’m grateful for you, Ben.”

Cormac drove off, watching in the rearview mirror as Ben made his way to the office to wait. He tried not to think of everything that could go wrong with this.

It’ll be fine.
